about
'Never Like That' came about during a late night demo making session last year. It was 1am and Taylor had just finished a set with his band on a ship in Mexico - just prior to his set, he had fallen out of a relationship with a girl on the other side of the world.
Sitting in his cabin with a keyboard, rode mic, notebook and his computer, Taylor started writing and recording down his feelings. The first idea that surfaced was the emphasis on the “you were never like that” chorus inspired by change we have in response to a breakup. The song explores the concept of how some people can completely change their personality and surround themselves with people they once never associated with, as a form of escape from the pain they feel inside after falling out with someone they once/still loved.
Giving the lyrics a sense of rhythmic urgency and repetition emphasizing his frustrations and feelings that night in his cabin, the first demo of 'Never Like That' was made. It was then recorded and co-produced with Auckland-based producer Sam Jones at BigPop studios in New Zealand and mixed by Auckland-based engineer Jacob Rush.

Never Like That - Taylor Roche LYRICS
You were never like that
You were never like that
You were never like that
You were never like
You would love me so bad
You would love me so bad
You would love me so bad
You would love me like
Ohh ohh ohh
You would love me like,
Ohh ohh ohh,
Yeah
A little disheartening
The fake friends, cigarette stains and velvet
You’ve never been that materialistic
I guess some things just never stay the same,
yeah
It’s kind of alarming
He’s everything that you said
You didn’t like in a man
That personality you said you hate,
you hate.
I heard you told your friends I treated you like shit,
I heard you told your parents I wasn’t the right fit,
But girl I still know you better,
‘Cause when we were together,
Yeah
You were never like that
You were never like that
You were never like that
You were never like
You would love me so bad
You would love me so bad
You would love me so bad
You would love me like
Ohh ohh ohh
Yeah
You would love me like,
Ohh ohh ohh,
Yeah
Stuck in my head now
No lights on, I’m lost in my bed now
While you share your night with someone else
‘Till they see a heart in your phone next to my name,
my name
Then you tell your friends that I moved out
And never called you back
And you tell your parents I left town
And covered up my tracks
Girl I thought I knew you better,
‘Cause when we were together,
Yeah
You were never like that
You were never like that
You were never like that
You were never like
You would love me so bad
You would love me so bad
You would love me so bad
You would love me like
Ohh ohh ohh
Yeah,
You would love me like,
Ohh ohh ohh,
Yeah, whoa yeah
You were never like that
You were never like that
You were never like that
You were never like
You would love me so bad
You would love me so bad
You would love me so bad
You would love me like
Ohh ohh ohh
You were never like that
I’m stuck in my head, so lost in my bed
He’s just what you said, you don’t like in a man
You were never like that
(I’m stuck in my head)
You were never like that
You were never like that
You were never like
You would love me so bad
(You loved me so bad)
You would love me so bad
You would love me so bad
You would love me like
Ohh ohh ohh
(Wish you were mine instead)
You would love me like,
(While you’re in his bed)
Ohh ohh ohh,
Yeah
You were never like that.
